RDA Sydney Celebrates Agribusiness Collaboration in Sydney's Peri-Urban region
3 JUNE 2020
Dr Rob Lang, Chairman RDA Sydney, is pleased to announce receipt of a Smart Farms Small Farms Grant from the Commonwealth’s National Landcare Program.
The project entitled “How to run a resilient and profitable agricultural enterprise in Sydney’s peri-urban fringe in a rapidly changing environment and marketplace” seeks to build the capabilities of current and future land managers to ensure the survival of agribusinesses in Sydney's peri-urban region.
Dr Lang said, “The overarching objective is to support sustainable agricultural production in Sydney’s peri-urban region and help viable enterprises manage the transition towards more sustainable land management practices and adopt new technologies to meet future challenges”.
“Following on from recent bushfires, drought and the COVID-19 pandemic, this project is extremely timely and will highlight the value of industries in Sydney’s peri-urban region” said Dr Lang.
“This highly productive region is uniquely situated between natural bushland and environmentally sensitive areas including the UNESCO world heritage Blue Mountains National Park, the city’s water catchment and highly urbanised areas. The peri-urban region provides an important buffer between our bushlands and the city”, said Dr Lang.
To achieve the project’s objectives, we have partnered with the Western Sydney Local Land Services, Hawkesbury City Council, Liverpool City Council and Wollondilly Shire Council to establish two Communities of Practice to provide ongoing support, advisory services and together we will deliver a series of stakeholder led workshops.
Through cross-sectoral collaborations, including landcare groups and business supply chain partners, this project will showcase best practice case studies, new technologies and encourage innovation to enable land managers adopt sustainable business practices and remain profitable and resilient.
