The population of the Sydney region has expanded to over 4.9 million in 2018, a rise of 1.9% over the previous year. According to data from NSW Planning & Environment, average annual growth will peak at 1.74% by 2021. The Sydney population in 2036 is estimated to grow to 6.4 million when the average annual growth rate will be 1.44%. Over 1 million people from the increase in population to 2036 are expected to reside in Western Sydney.

The RDA Sydney Region covers the 33 local government areas extending from Hornsby in the north, to Blue Mountains in the West and to Sutherland and Wollondilly in the South. With a current population of 4.9 million and anticipated to grow to 6.4 million by 2036,, the Sydney Region continues to thrive. One of the primary challenges for Sydney is to achieve sustainable and just growth, with equitable access to employment and services across the entire Region.
